As the objects in the cases demonstrate, government propaganda was omnipresent in the daily life of the civilian population; thus, children played with toy soldiers and could even wear miniature uniforms. The war offered advertising ploys, and manufactured or craft objects served to stigmatize the enemy and exalt patriotic images.
This psychological mobilization was no longer sufficient, however: on the front and behind the lines, declining morale found expression in strikes and mutinies that were harshly repressed (1917-1918). |
